V-belt pulleys (also known as vee belt sheaves) are devices that use a v-belt, a mechanical linkage having a trapezoidal cross-section, to transmit power between axles. These components work together to provide a slipping- and misalignment-resistant high-speed power transmission solution.

The primary purpose of V-belt pulleys is to transmit power between two parallel drive shafts. The geometry of the groove or grooves placed around the circle of the pulley, which guides and obtain traction on a v-belt, is the most apparent difference between a v-belt pulley and other types of pulleys (round belt, flat, etc.). The accompanying video provides an in-depth look at the basics of v-belts and their benefits and variations. Types of V-Belt Pulleys

  • Standard pulleys are pulleys with typical dimensions, and one or more grooves, and are designed to work with classic, small-engine, and hexagonal-style v-belts.
  • Companion pulleys have built-in spokes that run radially around the pulley. Because of this, fractional horsepower pulleys benefit from a high strength-to-weight ratio.
  • Many v-belt drives employ idler pulleys as belt tensioners, but they play a crucial role in maintaining the necessary tension to drive the transmission. Because no torque must be delivered to this axle, idlers can interact with either the wedged or flat side of the v-belt. Idler pulleys diminish belt life and drive efficiency, but they’re necessary for gearboxes where the drive needs to clear obstructions or the driven pulley can’t maintain a sufficient arc of contact with the v-belt to transmit torque.
  • Variable speed pulleys have a variable pitch that allows the driving RPM to be adjusted, usually within a % range. These pulleys can also be used to keep belt tension under dynamic loads.
  • Two or more non-adjustable grooves with various pitches are placed around the same shaft in step pulleys. These pulleys alter the transmission’s speed ratio.
